A World Without Cars
Just 20 kilometres from the crowded streets of Istanbul, the Princes Islands (Adalar in Turkish) offer one of the most remarkable escapes in any major city. Nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, all car-free — the only transport is horse-drawn carriage, bicycle, or your own feet. The air smells of pine and sea, the streets are lined with wooden Victorian-era mansions, and the pace of life is entirely different from the mainland.
Which Island to Visit
Büyükada (Big Island)
The largest and most popular island, with the best range of restaurants, beaches, and things to see. Take a horse carriage for the full scenic tour (about 1.5 hours), or rent a bicycle. Climb to the hilltop Monastery of St. George for panoramic views. Famous for its beach clubs and seafood restaurants on the water.
Heybeliada
Quieter and more local than Büyükada. Beautiful pine forests, the historic Naval School, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Very popular with Istanbul's Greek community.
Burgazada & Kınalıada
The smallest of the commonly visited islands. Burgazada has a lovely village feel; Kınalıada has red-tinted rocks and is home to the largest Armenian community of the islands.
How to Get There
Ferries depart from Kabataş (near Dolmabahçe), Bostancı on the Asian side, and Kadıköy. Journey time to Büyükada is approximately 60–75 minutes from the European side. Shehir Hatlari public ferries are comfortable and scenic. Use your Istanbulkart.
What to Do on Büyükada
- Horse carriage tour (Fayton): The classic experience — 1.5 hours around the island's forested perimeter. Negotiate the price at the pier.
- Rent a bicycle: Multiple rental shops near the pier. Cycling around the island takes about 2–3 hours with stops.
- Monastery of St. George: A 30-minute uphill walk through pine forest. The views from the top encompass the entire island chain and the Istanbul skyline on the horizon.
- Beach clubs: Several good spots on the island's southern shore — clean sea, sun loungers, fresh fish for lunch.
- Walking the streets: The painted wooden mansions are extraordinary. Wander the backstreets of the village.
Tips
- Go on a weekday — weekends in summer see enormous crowds from Istanbul.
- Start early — first ferries from Kabataş leave around 7 AM.
- Bring cash — some restaurants and carriage operators don't take cards.
- Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk or hike.
