Day 1 — The Heart of the Old City
Start your Istanbul adventure in Sultanahmet, the historic peninsula where empires were built. This compact district packs more history per square metre than almost anywhere on Earth.
Morning: Hagia Sophia & Blue Mosque
Arrive at Hagia Sophia right when it opens to beat the crowds. Spend at least an hour inside — the 6th-century dome, Byzantine mosaics, and the sense of scale are simply breathtaking. Cross the square to the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque). Admire its six minarets and the 20,000 hand-painted Iznik tiles that give the interior an otherworldly blue glow.
Afternoon: Topkapi Palace & Spice Bazaar
Head to Topkapi Palace, the nerve centre of the Ottoman Empire for 400 years. The Imperial Treasury and the Harem are must-sees — budget two to three hours. Walk down to the Egyptian Spice Bazaar in Eminönü for your first taste of Turkish delights, dried fruits, and fresh-ground coffee.
Evening: Dinner in Beyoğlu
Cross the Galata Bridge, watching fishermen dangle their lines overhead. Head up to Beyoğlu for dinner — try balık ekmek (grilled fish sandwich) from the boats below, or sit down at a meyhane for mezze and rakı. The neighbourhood buzzes all night.
Day 2 — Bosphorus & Asian Side
Morning: Bosphorus Cruise
Book an early-morning Bosphorus cruise. Gliding between two continents, you'll see Ottoman palaces, wooden yalı mansions, and the two magnificent suspension bridges. A guided cruise lasts 1.5–2 hours and gives you the full panoramic picture of Istanbul's geography.
Afternoon: Kadıköy
Take a ferry to Kadıköy on the Asian shore. This lively neighbourhood is beloved by locals for its food market, independent cafés, and street-art scene. Stroll through the market, sample street food, and enjoy an ice cream on the waterfront — far fewer tourists, far more authentic.
Evening: Galata Tower Sunset
Return to the European side and climb the Galata Tower for panoramic sunset views over the Golden Horn, Bosphorus, and old city skyline. Book tickets online to skip the queue.
Day 3 — Palaces & Grand Bazaar
Morning: Dolmabahçe Palace
Dolmabahçe Palace is the lavish 19th-century successor to Topkapi — 285 rooms, 46 halls, and the largest Bohemian crystal chandelier in the world (weighing 4.5 tonnes). Guided tours run hourly; arrive early.
Afternoon: Grand Bazaar Shopping
No trip to Istanbul is complete without time in the Grand Bazaar — 4,000 shops, 61 covered streets, and a history stretching back to 1461. Bargain for ceramics, leather goods, lanterns, and Turkish towels. Insider tip: the jewellery quarter in the centre has the best gold and silver.
Evening: Farewell Turkish Bath
End your trip at a historic hamam. The Çemberlitaş Hamamı, built by the famous architect Sinan in 1584, is one of the finest. The traditional scrub and foam massage is the perfect way to wind down before your flight.
Practical Tips
- Buy the Istanbul Museum Pass — it covers Topkapi, Hagia Sophia Museum, and many others at a significant discount.
- Use the Istanbulkart travel card for ferries, trams, and metro — buy one at any major transport hub.
- The T1 tram line connects Sultanahmet to the Grand Bazaar in minutes.
- Dress modestly when visiting mosques — shoulders and knees covered; women need a headscarf.
- Hiring a licensed guide for at least one day dramatically increases what you'll understand and remember.
