The World's Oldest Shopping Mall
The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) has been in continuous operation since 1461, making it one of the oldest covered markets in the world. With 4,000 shops, 61 covered streets, 21 gates, and an estimated 250,000–400,000 visitors daily, it is also one of the most visited tourist attractions on Earth. Don't let that intimidate you — with the right knowledge, it's an incredible experience.
What to Buy
Turkish Ceramics & Tiles
The classic Istanbul souvenir. Look for authentic hand-painted Iznik-style pieces with the classic cobalt blue-and-white motifs or the distinctive Kütahya multicolour style. Price range: 100–5,000 TL depending on size and quality. Avoid plastic-painted pieces — the real thing has a slightly irregular, hand-done look.
Carpets & Kilims
The bazaar's most famous specialty. Turkish carpets are among the finest in the world. Prices vary enormously by size, material (silk vs. wool), age (antique vs. new), and origin. A reputable carpet dealer will be happy to explain the difference. Don't rush this purchase — sit down, have tea, and take your time. Shipping is available worldwide.
Gold & Silver Jewellery
The jewellery quarter in the centre of the bazaar is excellent. Gold is sold by weight (current gold price + workmanship). Ottoman-inspired filigree silver, evil eye (nazar) pendants, and turquoise pieces are popular. Certificates of authenticity can be provided.
Turkish Towels (Peshtemal)
Flat-woven cotton hammam towels — thin, absorbent, lightweight, and beautiful. Far more useful than a regular towel for travel. The best quality comes from Denizli.
Leather Goods
Bags, wallets, belts, and jackets. Turkish leather quality can be excellent — look for full-grain leather and solid stitching.
What to Skip
Avoid the cheap tourist tat around the main gates — mass-produced "evil eye" keychains, low-quality "handmade" ceramics, fake branded goods. These are aimed at impulse buyers and poor value.
Bargaining Etiquette
Bargaining is expected in the Grand Bazaar (but not in regular shops outside). Start at 50–60% of the asking price and expect to settle around 60–75%. Always be friendly — it's a negotiation, not a fight. Accepting tea is not an obligation to buy. It is perfectly acceptable to say "no thank you" and walk away at any point.
Navigation Tips
- The bazaar is easy to get lost in — download an offline map beforehand.
- Main entrances are from Nuruosmaniye Gate (near Hagia Sophia) and Beyazıt Gate (near the university).
- The covered streets are organised roughly by trade — jewellery in the centre, carpets at the edges, ceramics near the outer ring.
- Opening hours: Mon–Sat, 8:30 AM – 7:00 PM. Closed Sundays and public holidays.
