Dolmabahçe Palace
The first major landmark heading north from Beşiktaş. The 600-metre-long white marble facade facing the water was designed to project Ottoman power in the European style. This was where Atatürk died in 1938.
Ortaköy Mosque & Bridge
One of Istanbul's most photographed views — the Neo-Baroque Ortaköy Mosque framed by the first Bosphorus Bridge (officially the July 15th Martyrs Bridge). The bridge spans 1,560 metres and was completed in 1973.
Rumeli and Anadolu Fortresses
Two massive fortresses face each other across the narrowest point of the Bosphorus. Rumelihisarı on the European side was built by Mehmed II in just four months in 1452 to cut off Constantinople's supply lines before the final conquest. The older Anadolu Hisarı on the Asian side dates to the late 14th century.
Yalı Mansions
Wooden waterfront mansions built by Ottoman nobles and wealthy merchants. The oldest surviving yalı dates to the 17th century. Prices for these homes today reach tens of millions of euros.
Second Bosphorus Bridge
The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (1988), longer than the first at 1,510 metres. Between the two bridges lies the most scenic stretch of the Bosphorus.
Types of Bosphorus Cruise
Public Ferry (Şehir Hatları)
The cheapest option — a few lira with your Istanbulkart. The long Bosphorus public ferry goes to Anadolu Kavağı and back, taking about 6 hours round trip. Scenic but slow, no commentary, crowded.
Short Public Cruise
Hour-long "short tour" runs from Eminönü/Beşiktaş. Covers only the lower Bosphorus. Budget-friendly, basic commentary.
