Istanbul Has Four Real Seasons
Istanbul's climate is humid subtropical, meaning it has genuine, distinct seasons — hot summers, mild springs and autumns, and cool, rainy winters. Unlike much of the Mediterranean, it can genuinely rain and get cold (even snow!) between December and February. This variety means there's a best time for every type of traveller.
Spring (April – May): The Best Overall
Most tourism professionals consider April and May the absolute peak time to visit Istanbul. Temperatures hover around 15–22°C — perfect for walking. The tulip festival in April sees millions of flowers bloom in parks across the city (the tulip is a symbol of Istanbul, originating here before it went to the Netherlands). Crowds are significant but manageable. Gardens and parks are at their most beautiful.
Summer (June – August): Hot and Busy
Temperatures reach 28–33°C, humidity is high, and tourist numbers are at their maximum. The main sights have long queues and the city feels crowded. That said, summer has its rewards: long daylight hours, vibrant nightlife, open-air concerts, and beach clubs on the Bosphorus. If you come in summer, book everything in advance and do major sights early morning or evening.
Autumn (September – November): Second Best
September and October are arguably even better than spring for some visitors. The summer crowds thin out but the weather stays warm (22–26°C in September, 16–20°C in October). Light is beautiful for photography. November turns cool and rainy, but the city has a moody, atmospheric quality that many visitors find appealing.
Winter (December – February): Quiet and Atmospheric
Winter in Istanbul is underrated. Temperatures average 5–10°C with frequent rain and occasional snow — transforming the city into something magical, especially if it snows over Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Museums are uncrowded, prices are lower, and you experience the city as locals do. Bring a warm coat and waterproof shoes.

- May: Lovely (20°C avg). Best balance of weather and crowds.
- June: Hot (26°C avg), crowds building.
- July: Peak heat (28°C), peak crowds. Book well ahead.
- August: Hottest month (28°C). Ramadan may overlap (check dates annually).
- September: Excellent (24°C avg). Crowds dropping, weather still summer-warm.
- October: Great (19°C). Cooler, beautiful light, manageable crowds.
- November: Rain increases, cooling (14°C). Good value, fewer crowds.
- December: Cold, Christmas atmosphere in some areas. Atmospheric.
